Fightstar breaks new ground

Published by Smacktalk on

May 2nd 2015 sees Fightstars take another massive step to the development of MMA in South Africa. With the latest fight card been released today, there are no fewer than 10 pro amm fights! This is a landmark in MMA in SA and show the growth and development of the sport.

We caught up with Fightstar matchmaker Grant Oliff and threw  a couple of jabs

ST – Fightstar has grown over the years, what are some of your best and worst memories?

GO – Ja, it’s been a crazy ride. Best memories……. There are so many, I think if I go through each show there are so many highlights. Form a sold out FS1 to a sold out FS 11 it has been an amazing ride. Also we have had so much fun doing it.

Worst Memories are easy, the injuries, kobus Dauth shoulder in FS 4, Fran’s broken leg in FS 6 that’s something that really bothers me. I know its part of the game but still, not lekker.

ST – There have been some great fights which are your personal best?

GO – there have been some crackers Immediately Kerron Skinner Vs Morne Prinsloo,Kerron Skinner vs Gordan Roodman and Jasen Van Der Merwe vs Jaydee Van der Merwe (2) jump out at me. There are so many more when I think about it, I think every event has produced top quality fights, fights that are considered to be special. Giovanni Pretorius vs Jason Lang absolute cracker, like I say I can probably name 30 great fights from the three years.

ST – There are 10 pro amm fights on the card at FS12, this is an amazing achievement. It proves that FS at the top.

GO – Not at all, it proves that MMA is going places. Yes we attract the top fighters, but the talent pool is just growing and growing. FS is doing its bit but so too are the other promotions and the association.

ST – What happened to Blackbelt? When will Fightstar be on TV?

GO – Ahh that’s really frustrating, Jason Bezuidenhout worked so hard to secure our own slots and own show and then …….. Nothing. I believe that blackbelt did not renew their contract with DSTV. Don’t really know why. As for new options all I can say, we are close, soon we will be available again.

ST – Everyone wants to know when Fightstar is going to be hitting the road? Are there plans to move the show?

GO –  Yes, we have plans too. We are looking at moving around the country and maybe a show in Namibia. These things all take massive amount of planning, so it’s on the board but not in motion yet!

ST – Lastly, is there anyone you would like to thank?

GO – There are so many people that contribute and help. My wife Heather Oliff for her amazing support, my partners, Jason, Shaun and Pietro. The sponsors that back us, a big thank you. The Fightstar fans, we always have such awesome crowds and lastly the athletes and their coaches, these guys come through and put on the show. They always leave it in the cage and make Fightstars the best place to compete.

There we have it come May 2nd we will see another massive Fightstar event with 3 Title fights and plenty of action so make sure you don’t miss out!
