MMA Training | Jiu Jitsu with Bobby| Rear Choke

This week we focus on what must be the most commonly used Jits move in MMA – the Rear Choke.  It is simple and effective and ends fights more often than not.

For more info on Bobby and for personalised training info please visit www.bjmma.co.za.  Bobby and his wife Jenny run one of the best gyms in Johannesburg and they are always willing and ready to help.  The coach students from all levels and some of SA’s top pros.

Step 1

Bobby has his hooks (heels and feet) in very deep and has a gable grip with an over and under hook (arms) on his opponent.  This is the starting position and ensures complete control of the opponent throughout the move.

Step 2

Bobby has secured wrist control on his opponent and has pushed his arm down to his legs which ensures the opponent cannot defend against the choke.  He has also slipped his other arm around his opponents neck (the bicep and forearm must be on either side to ensure blood circulation is cut off) with his elbow in line with his opponents chin.  Bobby has his hand open to ensure he can receive his own bicep.

Step 3

Bobby brings his free arm up and grabs his bicep and places his other hand behind his opponents head to protect his fingers – he also pushes on the back of his opponents head to increase the pressure of the choke.  He squeezes his elbows together as hard as he can and pushes his shoulders back and chest out to ensure maximum pressure – and ultimately blood loss.

Reverse Angle.

Take not of the fact that Bobby’s elbow is in line with his opponents chin and just how deep he has the choke.
