AFL Rebelion 27 Aug

Mixed Martial Arts , No Rules Fighting or Cage Fighting are the names that this sport has commonly become known by, and this explosion of talent, muscle and skill has fast become one of the most exciting ways to spend a Friday evening.

Amateur Fight league, or AFL, has been singled out as one of the leading amateur MMA tournaments, with two successful events under their belt to date. Formerly held at Greyville Race Course in Durban, these promoters have been forced to relocate to a new, bigger, better venue in order to accommodate the crowds that gather for this spectacular night of fighting. Their third tournament, Rebellion, will be held at the Old Mutual Sports Hall in Francois Road (Rick Turner Road), Gate 9, UKZN, next to the Golf Driving Range.

Amateur Fight League is headed up by three partners, Mark Delafield, Darryl Faught and Justin Ferrier. Each bring a different aspect and area of expertise to the table, and together seem to have found the correct mix when it comes to creating an all round experience for no rules cage fighting fans.

An AFL evening consists of 15-20 specially matched, grueling amateur fights, and spectators have come to learn to expect anything from these. AFL has placed a huge focus on developing MMA, and gives young, up and coming fighters from around the country an opportunity to showcase their talents.

All fighting takes place in a 6m octagon cage, designed, constructed and sponsored by local engineering firm, Avellini Brothers. Despite the given name, various restrictions are put in place to ensure the fighters’ safety at all times. On-site doctors and paramedics attend every event, and referees are in the ring to keep fighters in line. Under no circumstances are fighters allowed to stomp or knee their opponent’s heads, and all fighters are required to wear head guards as an added precaution.

MMA is actually an extremely disciplined, taxing sport which requires much control. MMA brings various fighting styles together, such as Muay Thai, Jui Jitsu, Wrestling and Boxing to name but a few, and fighters may win by means of knockouts, technical knockouts, or submissions via verbal or physical tap outs.  Once spectators understand the mechanics of a mixed martial arts fight, it is clear to see that any fight which consists of three, three minute rounds calls for a huge amount of skill and dedication from each fighter.

AFL 3, Rebellion will take place on Friday the 27th of August 2010 at the Old Mutual Sports Hall, and doors open at 6pm.

Standing tickets will cost you a mere R50, while a table which seats 10 is R2500. Table Tickets include a full three course meal, a few complimentary beers and a cage side seat.

Fans are in for a treat, as the Main fight of the evening will be a Middleweight Title fight, between Armand de Bruyn of Pinetown and Jason Culverwell of Richards Bay.

    standing seats?!

  • Action

Well it will be difficult to stand for the whole event and I can see a lot of unhappy people as not everyone will see the action in the ring.

Just to let everyone know, seating works as follows:

A table will cost you R2500, seats 10 and will surround the cage.
Tickets for the VIP Cocktail area, which is elevated and includes a secluded balcony, go for R100.
General admission is R50, and will get you a seat in the grand stand.

Everyone will have a clear view of the cage and a seat.
    It’s an awsome venue.

@Eddie, when is the AFL coming to JHB?

  • eddie

Joburg is definitely on the cards for AFL!

I’m sure Smacktalk will have all the details available online as soon as the decision has been made.

    Does anyone know the results?

I’m quite surprised that there isnt already an article up about it. wow what an awesome event. Must’ve been at least a thousand people there! Talk about setting a new standard in amateur mma! The fights were awesome… looks like we’ve got some real talent coming through. The event itself was solid, well organised and had something for every fan. Well done to the AFL!!!

    @stanima…

It is hard to judge the amount of people in a venue… 1000 is a bit extreme. My guess was 750!

Great to see amateur’s gaining experience through smaller federations. I’d like to see them come through the rankings at a Fight Force event!
